Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are a group of musculoskeletal disorders of the masticatory system.
These disorders are responsible for the second most common pain complaint seen in the dental office. Therefore, every dentist should have a sound understanding of TMD so that the most appropriate care will be selected for the patient. This presentation will define the relationship between occlusion and TMD, as well as describe muscle and joint disorders, along with management strategies for each. The appropriate use of occlusal appliances will be discussed and whether it is appropriate to follow up with dental care.
- Be able to identify those pain disorders that will likely respond to your therapy from those that will not.
- Describe the most favorable orthopedically stable relationship between the occlusion and condylar position for restorative dentistry.
- Describe the appropriate use of occlusal appliance therapy for muscle pain and joint pain.
- List common mechanism that explain why an occlusal appliance may reduce a patient’s TMD symptoms
